Description
Metoprolol is used alone or together with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk for heart attacks. These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled .
Metoprolol is also used to treat severe chest pain (angina) and lowers the risk of repeated heart attacks. It is given to people who have already had a heart attack. In addition, metoprolol is used to treat patients with heart failure .
This medicine is a beta-blocker. It works by affecting the response to nerve impulses in certain parts of the body, like the heart. As a result, the heart beats slower and decreases the blood pressure. When the blood pressure is lowered, the amount of blood and oxygen is increased to the heart .
This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription .

Metoprolol: Immediate-Release and Extended-Release
The uses for immediate-release metoprolol include:
High blood pressure control
Relief of angina symptoms
Treatment following a heart attack to improve survival.
The extended-release metoprolol uses include treatment for:
High blood pressure
Angina
Congestive heart failure.
High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers (for example, 120/80). The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure (hypertension) is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90 with multiple blood pressure readings.
Based on clinical studies, metoprolol has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The higher the dose of metoprolol, the greater the drop in blood pressure is expected to be. By lowering blood pressure, metoprolol can also decrease the risks that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). Metoprolol does not, however, cure high blood pressure.
