Before Using
In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this medicine, the following should be considered:
An Introduction to Oxybutynin Side Effects
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with oxybutynin chloride (Ditropan®); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with oxybutynin. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of oxybutynin side effects with you.)
Serious Oxybutynin Side Effects
Some side effects with oxybutynin, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
Severe constipation
Worsening of glaucoma
Difficulty passing urine
Confusion or hallucinations
An irregular heart rhythm
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as unexplained rash, hives, itching, wheezing, and unexplained swelling.
