Description

Propranolol is used alone or together with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk of heart attacks. These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled .

Propranolol is also used to treat severe chest pain (angina), migraine headaches, or hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (thickened heart muscle) .

This medicine may also be used to treat irregular heartbeats, tremors, or pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor). It may also be used to reduce the risk of death in patients who have heart attacks .

This medicine is a beta-blocker. It works by affecting the response to nerve impulses in certain parts of the body, like the heart. As a result, the heart beats slower and decreases the blood pressure. When the blood pressure is lowered, the amount of blood and oxygen is increased to the heart .

This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription .

What Is Propranolol Used For? -- An Overview
Propranolol hydrochloride (Inderal®) has been licensed to treat a number of conditions. Propranolol is used for:

High blood pressure control
Relief of angina symptoms
Treatment following a heart attack to improve survival
Atrial fibrillation treatment
Migraine prevention
Decreasing the severity of tremors in people with familial or essential tremor
Improving symptoms in people with hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, which is a condition in which the middle part of the heart thickens
Controlling pheochromocytoma symptoms.

High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers (for example, 120/80). The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure (hypertension) is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90.

In clinical studies, propranolol has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressures. The higher the dose of propranolol, the greater the drop in blood pressure is expected to be. By lowering blood pressure, propranolol can decrease the risks that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). Propranolol does not, however, cure high blood pressure.
