Description

Sildenafil Citrate (Generic Viagra) belongs to a group of medicines that delay the enzymes called phosphodiesterases from working too quickly. The penis is one of the areas where these enzymes work. Why Sildenafil Citrate?

Sildenafil Citrate is an oral drug for male impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction (ED). It works by dilating blood vessels in the penis, allowing the inflow of blood needed for an erection.

Most important fact about Sildenafil Citrate

Sildenafil Citrate causes erections only during sexual excitement. It does not work in the absence of arousal.

How should you take Sildenafil Citrate?

Taking Sildenafil Citrate approximately 1 hour before sexual activity works best for most men. Depending on how and when the drug works for you, an interval of one-half hour to as much as 4 hours may prove ideal.

If you miss a dose: Sildenafil Citrate is not for regular use. Take it only before sexual activity.

Storage: Store at room temperature.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Sildenafil Citrate.

  • More common side effects may include: Abnormal vision (color tinge, blurring, sensitivity to light), acid indigestion, diarrhea, flushing, headache, nasal congestion, urinary tract infection

Heart attack, stroke, heart irregularities, dangerous surges in blood pressure, and sudden death have all been reported after use of Sildenafil Citrate, usually in men with existing cardiac risk factors, and typically during or shortly after sex.

Why should Sildenafil Citrate not be prescribed?

Do not take Sildenafil Citrate if you are taking any nitrate-based drug, including nitroglycerin patches (Nitro-Dur, Transderm-Nitro), nitroglycerin ointment (Nitro-Bid, Nitrol), nitroglycerin pills (Nitro-Bid, Nitrostat), and isosorbide pills (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate). Combining Sildenafil Citrate with these drugs can cause a severe drop in blood pressure.

If Sildenafil Citrate gives you an allergic reaction, do not use it again.

What Is Viagra?
Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) is a prescription medication used for treating problems with obtaining or maintaining an erection.

Who Makes Viagra?
Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer.

What Is Viagra Used For?
Viagra has been licensed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, can be a total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. Essentially, erectile dysfunction is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.

Viagra: How It Works
Viagra works by blocking a chemical that causes blood to flow out of the penis. More blood in the penis means an improved erection.

Viagra: Effects
In previous clinical studies, up to 88 percent of men reported that Viagra improved their erections. Viagra was also shown to be effective in men with certain medical conditions and following various types of surgeries (see Effects of Viagra for more information).

Side Effects of Viagra
(The Viagra side effects listed below are NOT a complete list of possible side effects of Viagra. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Viagra side effects with you.)

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with Viagra; however, not everyone who takes Viagra will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate Viagra well. When people do develop side effects, in most cases they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

The most common side effects of Viagra include:

Headache --16 percent of people
Facial flushing -- 10 percent of people
Indigestion, known as dyspepsia -- 7 percent of people
Nasal congestion -- 4 percent of people
Urinary tract Infections (UTI) -- 3 percent of people
Vision problems, including trouble telling the difference between blue and green, increased sensitivity to light, or blurred vision -- 3 percent of people
Diarrhea -- 3 percent of people
Dizziness -- 2 percent of people
Unexplained rash -- 2 percent of people.

If you have a heart or blood vessel disease (cardiovascular disease) or significant heart disease risk factors, you will have an increased chance of developing serious problems with the heart, brain, and blood vessels. These problems can result in a heart attack, stroke, or sudden death.

In people taking Viagra or other PDE5 inhibitors, there have been rare cases of a condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can lead to sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. If you experience any loss of vision while on Viagra, contact your healthcare provider immediately (see Viagra and Blindness).
